Innovation Center celebrates third anniversary
The DHL Innovation Center celebrated its third anniversary in March 2010, marking three years of developing tomorrow’s logistics solutions today.

Unique in the industry, the DHL Innovation Center provides a space where science, technology and industry experts can share their knowledge and develop cutting-edge solutions for logistics. Working in partnership with the industry, academia, and the corporate divisions of Deutsche Post DHL, the Innovation Center identifies future technological developments and tests them for their practical suitability for logistics through prototypes and pilot projects.

Among the current projects underway are the development of alternative technologies for CO2 neutral “green” logistics; real-time shipment monitoring, including temperature monitoring for sensitive goods, through RFID tags; and parcel-loading robots.
BA joins DHL strategic air cargo security partnership
British Airways World Cargo has joined DHL’s Strategic Air Cargo Security Partnership, making it one of DHL’s preferred air carriers, together with other important airlines from North America, Europe, the Middle East and Asia. The partnership facilitates a common understanding of standard operating procedures for high-value and high-risk air cargo, as well as the exchange of security best practices and information on crime trends.

“We are delighted to be teaming up with DHL – we recognize the importance and value of such a partnership in enhancing supply chain security,” says Steve Gunning, Managing Director, British Airways World Cargo.
Preparing pharmaceutical customers for new US screening mandates
Working in partnership with American Airlines Cargo, DHL is supporting pharmaceutical industry customers to prepare for the implementation of a new U.S. regulation requiring 100% screening of cargo carried on passenger aircraft. With just months to go before the regulation takes effect on August 1, 2010, the companies have started offering joint training sessions to educate pharmaceutical customers on how best to comply with the new mandates, in order to avoid undue delay of shipments.

“We are very pleased that DHL is working with American Airlines and the TSA to educate customers toward a ‘best practice’ approach to preparing for the 100% screening mandates,” says Dave Brooks, President of American Airlines Cargo.

Faster than the competition, even to Ulaanbaatar
DHL was victorious in the 2009 “Great Package Race” for international shipments, beating such competitors as UPS, FedEx and the U.S. Postal Service by two days and more to the Mongolian capital, Ulaanbaatar. The Great Package Race is an annual event carried out by students at the Supply Chain & Logistics Institute at Georgia Institute of Technology. The race includes the four most important parcel delivery service providers in the U.S., none of which knew that the package they were delivering was part of this competition.
Rock on
When Bon Jovi’s upcoming concert tour needed 18 tons of robots from ABB Robotics to be delivered urgently from Germany to the US, the rock group turned to DHL. These industrial robots are normally used for manufacturing automobiles, but the Bon Jovi band is using them to create special effects throughout their latest concert tour, by having the robots manipulate large sets during the show.

With the robots safely delivered, ABB Robotics and the Bon Jovi Tour Operator sent a letter of thanks to DHL for our high quality, responsive service. In particular, they appreciated the fact that, even during the Christmas holiday week, and in the midst of harsh winter weather, the people involved in this project were extremely engaged and showed a real “Can Do” attitude – a special DHL quality.

Asia Pacific
Optimizing Omani oil operations
Petroleum Development Oman (PDO) has extended its agreement with DHL Supply Chain in Oman for another two years. The contract, DHL’s largest fourth party logistics (4PL) operation globally, includes the supply chain management for PDO’s Well Engineering and Logistics Departments. PDO renewed its partnership with DHL because, over the past two years, DHL has helped optimize PDO’s operations, thereby saving it an estimated 20 drilling months.
Global 3PL of the year
DHL was awarded the coveted Global 3PL (third-party logistics) of the Year award at the Supply Chain Asia Logistics Awards 2009, organized by Supply Chain Asia magazine. DHL was honored for its innovation, service excellence and commitment to providing customers with superior express and logistics solutions. Paul Graham, CEO DHL Supply Chain Asia Pacific, and Kelvin Leung, CEO DGF, North Asia Pacific, were on hand to receive the award in Singapore.
Promoting Pakistan’s apparel exports
The new DHL Fashion and Apparel Center opened in Karachi, Pakistan, in late 2009. It consists of a team of industry experts who will stimulate trade within the region, as well as with North America and Europe. The team will develop customized solutions, provide consultancy and help better manage product flows through supply chains. “Pakistan is fast emerging on the world textile map as an important exporter of quality cotton textiles, apparel and other goods,” says Imran Shaikh, Managing Director, Pakistan, DHL Global Forwarding. “With improved machinery, quality control, skilled manpower and homegrown cotton, Pakistani textiles and apparel are being exported to buyers around the world.”
Boosting business in Bangladesh
DHL is expanding its business in Bangladesh through a new joint venture in the country, along with plans to invest US$10 million (€7.3 million) over the next few years. In addition, the company has launched the “DHL Fashion and Apparel Center of Excellence” to support the country’s growing textile industry. “The new joint venture signals our commitment to the region and complements our existing network in the Indian subcontinent,” says Thomas Tieber, CEO, DHL Global Forwarding, South Asia.
Supply chain excellence award
DHL Global Customer Solutions (GCS) has won the SCM Logistics Outstanding Partner in Supply Chain Excellence Award for 2009. The judges of the award praised GCS for creating an innovative Supply Chain Center of Excellence (SCCE). This is an industry-leading partnership that works hand in hand with the Singapore Economic Development Board. The center focuses on strategic consultancy, thought leadership, and technology and innovation. The SCCE supports local and foreign investors in the manufacturing and service sectors.

An independent panel of prestigious industry figures chose the winners of the SCM Logistics Excellence Award. “It is an honor for DHL to be recognized with such a well-respected industry award,” says Richard Owens, CEO, GCS, DHL Asia Pacific.

Europe
Making a fashion statement
The UK fashion chain House of Fraser has renewed and extended its multimillion-dollar agreement with DHL Supply Chain for another three years. DHL handles House of Fraser’s entire supply chain – from goods delivery, warehousing, and distribution, to vendor management. The renewed deal also includes the company’s online store and its new “wedding list service,” both of which were awarded to DHL’s specialist fashion unit in March 2009.

UK department store Debenhams has also extended its 12-year partnership with DHL until 2012. The new multimillion-dollar agreement sees DHL’s specialist fashion unit develop and provide all of Debenhams’ warehouse and distribution services to its 157 stores across the UK and Ireland. DHL has helped Debenhams implement a two-year cost improvement program focused on internal process reviews, operational developments and streamlining, which has also significantly cut its CO2 emissions.
Good news
News International, the main UK subsidiary of Rupert Murdoch’s News Corporation and the country’s largest newspaper publisher, has awarded DHL a five-year, multimillion-dollar contract to distribute some of the UK’s most famous newspapers, including The Sun, The Times, The Sunday Times, and News of the World. And, fittingly for the new partnership, both The Sun and DHL just celebrated their respective 40th anniversaries in 2009.

DHL outmaneuvered 11 competitors to nab what is considered to be one of the most high-profile contracts in the UK logistics market, beating out, among others, the former incumbent that had held the contract for the past 15 years. In the deal, DHL will deliver approximately 25 million newspapers every week to wholesalers across England and Wales - that is over four million per day. All in all, DHL is hauling 80% of the four titles in the UK.

DHL had already built up a solid relationship with News International’s mother company, News Corporation, in the U.S. This experience, combined with very competitive pricing, backed up by scale and the capability, were the crucial factors in winning the contract.
